The current state of SDGs in 2023: A post pandemic view

As we enter the year 2023, it's important to take a look at the progress made towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are a set of 17 goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015, aimed at ending poverty, protecting the planet, and ensuring prosperity for all. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development outlines targets for each goal, with the ultimate aim of creating a sustainable and equitable future for all.

So, how are we doing in terms of achieving the SDGs? Unfortunately, the current state of progress is not where it needs to be. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing inequalities and created new challenges for countries around the world, making it more difficult to achieve the SDGs.

According to the United Nations 2021 SDG Progress Report, progress towards achieving the SDGs was already slow before the pandemic hit. Now, progress has been set back even further, with many countries struggling to meet the basic needs of their citizens, let alone invest in sustainable development.

The report highlights a number of key areas where progress has been made, such as reducing poverty and improving access to education. However, there are also areas where progress has been slow or even reversed, such as gender equality, climate action, and reducing inequalities. The report also notes that progress has been uneven across different regions and within countries, with marginalized communities often left behind.

Sure, here are some additional data-driven points to consider:

According to the World Bank, extreme poverty (living on less than $1.90 per day) has increased for the first time in over 20 years due to the pandemic. In 2020, an estimated 9.4% of the global population lived in extreme poverty, up from 8.2% in 2019.

The World Health Organization reports that the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted essential health services in many countries, leading to an increase in preventable deaths. For example, the number of children receiving routine immunizations has declined, which could lead to outbreaks of preventable diseases.

A report by the International Labor Organization highlights the impact of the pandemic on employment, with an estimated 255 million full-time jobs lost in 2020. Women and young people have been disproportionately affected, and the informal sector has been particularly hard hit.

The United Nations reports that progress towards achieving gender equality has been slow, with women and girls continuing to face discrimination and violence. For example, women are more likely to work in the informal sector and have less access to education and financial services.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warns that urgent action is needed to address climate change, which is already having devastating impacts on people and the planet. The IPCC report highlights the need for rapid and far-reaching changes in all aspects of society to limit global warming and its impacts.

The United Nations notes that progress towards achieving peaceful and inclusive societies has been slow, with conflict and violence affecting many countries around the world. In addition, human rights abuses continue to be a concern, with marginalized groups often facing discrimination and persecution.

These data points highlight the ongoing challenges we face in achieving the SDGs and the urgent need for action. While progress has been made in some areas, there is still much work to be done to create a sustainable and equitable future for all. By using data and evidence-based decision making, we can identify the areas where action is most needed and take concrete steps towards achieving the SDGs.

So, what can be done to accelerate progress towards achieving the SDGs?

A number of key actions that can be taken, such as increasing investment in sustainable development, prioritizing the needs of marginalized communities, and strengthening partnerships between governments, civil society, and the private sector. It's also important to address the root causes of inequalities and injustices, such as discrimination and lack of access to resources.

Overall, the current state of progress towards achieving the SDGs in 2023 is concerning, but there is still hope. By working together and taking concrete actions, we can accelerate progress and create a sustainable and equitable future for all.
